Things Making Me Think

Happy Friday! How was your week? Mine was stressful due to my lack of financial know-how + my tendency to leave things I hate doing to the last possible second, but I finished my stupid taxes! (And I’m getting money back. Huzzah.)

Here are the things that made me think, smile, laugh, and feel happy this week:

This is what I should have done to get my taxes done earlier. (Obsessed with this idea.)

Pure awesomeness.

Love love love this post.

This made me laugh so hard.

The group vacation guide.

Must make ASAP.

Please buy me all these things.

Oh, and I wrote this story! (And also modeled for it!)

Reading: This, which is super cute. A bit juvenile at times, but so am I.

Writing: The YA contemporary “play story”. I feel as though I’m still having the problem of feeling the need to write out what happens in between my scenes (“Thursday was a boring day at school, as was Friday, but then Friday night rolls around….”) Note to self: skip the boring parts. Even in the first draft.

Watching: On Season Two of this, though I may need a break soon. I keep jumping at small noises, thinking about alien abductions, when really it’s just my cat.

Listening to: Whatever random stuff they put on at work. I like working in an office where there’s music playing all day. (Except when it’s country.)

Cooking: I made the best blueberry coffee cake in the world for my friend’s birthday last weekend. It’s my grandma’s recipe, so old it called for “shortening” (I used plain old butter.) One of those days I’m going to become one of those people who takes gorgeous moody shots of the food they bake and posts recipes to go with them, but that day is not today.

Happy Friday!

I am happy today because after cancelling our trip to Grenada, we ended up booking a last-minute flight to Florida to visit my lifelong best friend and her family. She just gave birth to her fifth child, so it’s going to be a long weekend spent catching up and playing with lots of small people. And strangely enough, her kids are some of the few I know that actually make me look forward to having my own (but not anytime soon). They’re just really cool small people.

Some other cool things from around the internets this week:

1. People who procrastinate are more creative. As are people who sleep late. My “bad habits”, justified 🙂

2. I found a really great new blog to follow (though it’s been around a while, which always makes me wonder what other great things are out there on the internets that I’m missing). This post about the daily habits of writers and other creatives really hit home for me, as making enough time to write is something I’ve been struggling with lately.

3. I love this idea, and will be shopping here exclusively from now on. (In theory.)

4. Finally, what to do when you’re having a bad day 🙂

Reading: On the final installment of this trilogy, which began with this book. Still liking it, but I’m hoping that in this book, the heroine attends far fewer meetings than in the second book. Meetings are the worst things in the world. I deal with them daily at work and really don’t need them cropping up in my YA fantasy.

Writing: My YA fantasy. I finally got to the exciting parts, so the writing’s coming much more easily 🙂

Watching: I need something new. Any recommendations?

Listening to: Recently discovered these guys–they’re different and kind of awesome.

Cooking: New category! I actually love to cook. Pouring a glass of wine, putting on Netflix, and making a giant mess in the kitchen for my boyfriend to clean up later is one of my favorite things to do. It’s the one time when my brain’s not mentally responding to an email or trying to figure out some plot problems or worrying that I still haven’t found the perfect armchair for my apartment. This week I made this and it was amazing, though next time I think I’ll try just baking the cauliflower and cheese alone then dipping it in the tomato sauce so it doesn’t get soggy.

How was your week??

Friday Things

Happy Friday! I love summer. It’s the season of getting invited to go beautiful places for free. We spent last weekend at Lake Sacandaga at our friends’ parents’ cabin, and this weekend we’re headed down to Long Beach Island to stay at my boyfriend’s aunt’s beach house. I’m looking forward to a few days of reading and relaxation. But first, three things that made my week:

  1. In my writing class, I was accused of being “too coy” with the plot of my novel. There’s a delicate balance between hinting at a mystery to create tension, and frustrating your readers by not telling them enough. This post does a really good job explaining how to toe that line.

2. Five life lessons from five years traveling the world.

3. Finally sundresses for the rest of us 🙂

Reading: Still this. It’s long. But good.

Watching: Friends on Netflix as I get ready in the morning. Laughing is such a great start to the day.

Listening to: Mat Kearney. It’s good stuff.
